What is BigCARE?

Cancer big data is a collection of high-density information from a variety of sources, and it requires sophisticated statistical and computational tools to analyze and extract knowledge. Built on a previous big data training program designed for general biomedical researchers, BigCARE is aimed at helping cancer researchers develop the necessary analytical skills to work with big data, and translate it into knowledge that facilitates precision cancer medicine.

BigCARE 2024 Summer Workshop

The Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC) of the University of California, Irvine is pleased to announce the annual NCI-funded workshop on “Big Data Training for Cancer Research” (BigCARE) on July 14-26, 2024. This intensive workshop will help cancer researchers develop skills for managing, visualizing, analyzing, and integrating various types of omics data in cancer studies. The workshop is open to researchers including oncologists, faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students. With supplemental funding from NIAID, we also welcome researchers in infectious & immune-mediated diseases. Individuals from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. The workshop will be held on-site at the University of California Irvine, in Irvine, CA. There is no cost for registration, tuition, food, and lodging! All applicants will be required to have finished coursework related to cancer biology, to have research training in cancer studies, and to have taken one graduate level class in statistics.

To apply to the workshop, applicants must complete the online application. It calls for applicants to provide personal information, a summary of education background, a research statement (at most 2000 characters), an NIH biosketch, and completion of a questionnaire which helps us assess your statistical/computing skills. Additionally, graduate students/post-docs/research staff will be asked for a letter of support from their mentor(s) that clearly states that they are supportive of your participation in the program and recognize the time commitment necessary to successfully complete the program.

You need to provide the CITI training certificate, complete pre-course survey, go through the pre-course materials, and set up accounts for accessing supercomputer as preparation for the training program. Instructions will be provided once you are enrolled.
